Ok, ok, ok. So this checking account isn't all that bad. They do have free ATM cash withdrawls, free checks for life (not sure if you need that) and FDIC insured (which these days, it's something you're looking for).So lets get down to details. This checking account comes out with no monthly charges*, free checks for life (I'd like to see that in writing), free MasterCard debit card, in-branch access*, free atm with-drawals*, and free over-draft or non-sufficient funds fee refund*.
I'd recommend this checking account for those that still need a checking account at a bank that has local branches. There are still a great amount of people that require the need to deposit checks inside a branch, if that's you then this checking account is one you should consider. This is probably one checking account that one would have in conjunction with a high yield interest checking account. Ideally, you'd be able to make the deposits here and continually transfer to a high yield checking account in order to maximize the return on your revolving balance.
Let's take a look at the fees associated with this checking account shall we? Ideally, you never have to incur any of the account fees below. In the case something does occur, you'll rest assure Washington Mutual should have a fee that's applicable to each and every case.
-$2 Non Wamu ATM Fee Charge
-$27-35$ Dollar NSF Fee Charge (After first free one)
-$12 Overdraft - Transfer Fee (Unless the account that's funding the transfer has of $10,000.)
-$30 Stop Payment Fee
-$15 Online Stop Payment Fee
All of the fees are listed here. In addition, there are two more fees here that are vague and most likely can be applied where Washington Mutual sees fit.
-$10 Account Abuse Fee
-$30 Research Fee
I'd recommend this account for those that manage their money well in a checking account. If slip ups are common for you or sometimes unavoidable try and steer clear from this checking account. Otherwise, WaMu's Free Checking has its perks and all in all is a good checking account.
